In Memoriam

We deeply appreciate the work and dedication of longtime housing advocates and allies: Erana Jackson Taylor, who served as an AmeriCorps VISTA Leader with Housing Action Illinois in 2019-2020; Allison Gaiter of CSH & SHPA; Leeanna Majors of CCH; and Janet Smith of UIC’s College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs and Nathalie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement. Our thoughts and condolences go out to their colleagues and families.

Additional $5 Million for Emergency Shelters

As the weather turns colder, many emergency shelters are getting full, and we expect the demand to increase. Fortunately, to address this concern, the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) will provide an additional $5 million in the expansion of access to emergency shelters, an investment strongly advocated for by Housing Action and our allies.

"The additional state funding that IDHS is providing will help emergency shelter providers serve additional people at a time when most all of the federal government resources that housed people during the COVID-19 pandemic have been exhausted, but the need for agencies serving people without a home has not lessened," said Bob Palmer, Policy Director for Housing Action Illinois for the official press release.

Join Housing Action and 120+ organizations who have signed a letter urging Governor Pritzker to include a $51 million increase for the Emergency and Transitional Housing (ETH) Program in his upcoming budget proposal. Our goal is to get to 200 organizational signers by December 20.

The letter has been prepared by the Illinois Shelter Alliance, Housing Action Illinois, and the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless to demonstrate the widespread support statewide from community-based organizations, mayors and municipal leaders, churches, hospitals, real estate agents, and advocates to increase access to shelter for Illinoisans experiencing homelessness.
