Act Now to Prevent Wave of Evictions & Foreclosures, Spike in Homelessness

Urge legislators to vote YES on resources to meet the critical needs of low-income renters, homeowners, and people experiencing homelessness.

The House of Representatives will vote as soon as Monday, June 29 on critically needed emergency housing resources and protections. These provisions will help keep renters and homeowners in their homes and address the health and safety of people experiencing homelessness!

Without immediate action by Congress, we will see a wave of people losing their homes and a spike in homelessness across the country.

The House already approved $200 billion for critically needed housing resources and protections in the HEROES Act, but Senate leadership continues to delay negotiations over the next coronavirus relief package.

Struggling renters and homeowners cannot wait! Rent and mortgage payments are due on July 1, and millions of the lowest-income renters across the nation can’t afford to pay. Eviction and foreclosure moratoriums are expiring, and local efforts to provide emergency assistance will be quickly overwhelmed by the need.

To underscore the urgency and pressure the Senate to act—either on the full HEROES Act or on emergency housing provisions alone—the House will vote next week on H.R. 7301, the Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020. The bill includes the housing and homelessness resources approved by the House in the HEROES Act, including:

$100 billion in emergency rental assistance
$75 billion in homeowner assistance
A national, uniform moratorium on evictions and foreclosures
$11.5 billion to prevent and respond to outbreaks among people experiencing homelessness
100,000 new emergency housing vouchers targeted to people with the greatest needs
$100 million for housing counseling
Additional funding resources and policies to ensure housing stability

I'm writing to urge you to immediately enact the critical housing investments and protections included in the "Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020" (H.R. 7301). These solutions for low-income renters and homeowners are all also included in the "Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act" to prevent evictions and homelessness while promoting housing stability among people with the greatest needs during and after this crisis. The stimulus checks and expanded unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act have helped, but these income boosts are coming to an end soon. In addition, many people with the greatest needs are facing challenges in accessing these resources. Even those who were successful will still be severely housing cost-burdened and at risk of homelessness unless Congress provides targeted assistance. Struggling renters and homeowners cannot wait! Every day that Congress waits to enact these vital housing investments and protections, policymakers put millions of low-income people at risk of eviction and homelessness. I urge you to support the critical housing resources and protections included in H.R. 7301 and the HEROES Act.
